Frequently asked questions

What is a counting scale used for?

A counting scale is used to count items quickly and accurately based on their weight. Instead of manually counting each individual piece, users weigh a batch of items and the scale computes the number of items or parts based on the average piece weight.

These scales are invaluable in a variety of industries and applications, including:

  • Inventory Management: Counting scales help businesses count inventory items rapidly, reducing manual labour and the risk of human error. They are crucial for maintaining accurate inventory records.

  • Production and Manufacturing: In production lines or assembly processes, counting scales ensure the correct number of components are included in the final product. They can also be used to count parts before they are packed or shipped.

  • Packaging and Shipping: Counting scales can verify that the correct number of items has been packaged or shipped. They can also be used to count incoming goods.

  • Retail: In retail, counting scales can help businesses manage stock levels efficiently, count cash, or handle any other task where items need to be counted quickly and accurately.

The goal of a counting scale is to improve efficiency, reduce errors, and save time in any process that requires counting of items.

How does sampling work on a counting scale?

Counting scales are specialised scales designed to count a large number of identical items based on the weight of a sample, also known as piece counting. They determine the average weight of a single item and then use that weight to estimate the number of items placed on the scale. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how sampling works in a counting scale:

  1. Sample Counting: A specific number of items (the sample) are manually counted and placed on the scale. This number can be anything, but commonly used sample sizes are 10, 20, 50, or 100 items.

  2. Determine Average Weight: The scale determines the total weight of the sample and divides it by the number of items in the sample to get the average weight of a single item. For example, if 10 items weigh 50 grams in total, then the average weight of one item is 5 grams.

  3. Bulk Counting: When a larger quantity of the same items is placed on the scale, the scale uses the previously determined average weight to estimate the total count of items. If you place a total weight of 500 grams of the same item, the scale would estimate there are 100 items based on the earlier calculated average weight of 5 grams per item. After the average piece weight is determined, place the bulk items on the scale. The scale then calculates the total number of pieces by dividing the total weight by the previously determined average piece weight using a simple rule of three.

  4. Tare Function: If the items are placed in a container, the weight of the container (tare weight) can be subtracted from the total weight to only count the items inside. This is done by first placing the empty container on the scale and pressing the tare button, which will reset the weight to zero. Then, when the items are added, the scale will display only the weight of the items, not the container.

  5. Re-sampling: If the items being counted might have varying weights (for instance, screws from different batches), then re-sampling might be needed when a new batch is introduced.

Counting scales simplify and speed up the counting process of large quantities of identical items (e.g. during an inventory) and by taking advantage of the uniform weight of the parts. Proper sampling, and adherence to recommended adjustment and calibration are key to ensuring counting accuracy.

What is the difference between display resolution and internal resolution?

  • Display Resolution: This refers to the smallest weight increment that can be displayed on the scale’s screen. Often termed as readability, it dictates the smallest discernible change in weight the scale can show. For instance, if a scale has a readability of 0.1g, it won’t display weights like 0.0040g. Mathematically, display resolution is calculated by dividing the scale’s total capacity by its readability.

  • Internal Resolution: This concept deals with how finely a scale can interpret the raw signals it receives from a weighed item and convert them into a digital readout. Essentially, it’s the scale’s capacity to break down its full weight capacity into the smallest divisions. It signifies the scale’s sensitivity in translating physical weight into a digital value. In essence, it’s about how many divisions or parts the entire capacity of the scale can be segmented into.
